River Ice Raku Vase
This unique wheel-thrown vase was treated to the naked raku process: after tightly wrapping the bisque vase in a copper mesh, it is coated with a thick slurry of white clay. After being removed from the kiln at 1800 degrees, the vase is quickly and briefly placed in a bed of sawdust and covered with a metal container. After a brief, intense smoking, the vase is removed and immediately sprayed with water, causing the slip coating to pop off, revealing its unique pattern. The pattern on this piece is reminiscent of winter ice floes on lakes and streams.
