The artist was living in Italy when she discovered her tropical palette. There she began to do intimate images of birthday parties in her family. Most of these celebrations took place in New York City. The color suggests the festive celebration, but the composition is intended to create tension. She was the oldest of all the children, probably 12 years old, and always felt out of place.
